Friends of the Earth is 50! Now THAT’S something to celebrate!
Friends of the Earth is one of the most active environment organisations in Victoria, Australia and elsewhere and this year is its 50th birthday. On EarthChat this week we are reviewing the organisation; its past work and current campaigns; its successes; and even regrets.
Campaigns Co-ordinator Cam Walker joins us to share the great stories of Friends of the Earth.
The earliest campaigns included the economic and environmental hazards of the Concorde supersonic passenger aircraft, opposition to uranium mining in Australia, a convincing case argued to the Ranger inquiry and Rides Against Uranium to Canberra in 1976 and 77.
In the past 12 months, activism in campaigns to stop logging of Victoria’s native forests was successful, as was the EarthWorker initiative in Gippsland, a co-operative that builds solar water heaters with a bigger picture of energy and jobs transition to renewables - there's a long list.
FoE is one inspiring broad-based environment organisation. Cam Walker and EarthChat host Peter Lockyer wax lyrical about Friends of the Earth. This was the organisation central to shaping Peter Lockyer’s world as it turned out; but there's a broader celebration.
Join EarthChat on 103.9 Seymour FM this Friday at 10am for a good yarn.
